Awesome day at the CARC Clubhouse!

Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, the Volunteer Examiner Team administered Amateur Radio license exams to 26 candidates. The test session was broken into separate sessions to maintain state and local social distancing guidelines. Out of the 26 candidates, 16 earned their Technician License, 7 earned their General and 2 became Amateur Extras. Congratulations to all those who earned or upgraded their ticket.

The examination process is handled by volunteer HAMs, so when you think you are ready to take the test you can take it right here in Cleveland. The Cleveland Amateur Radio Club has test sessions on the second Saturday of every month except December at 10:00AM Eastern time. Special testing sessions are occasionally approved under extenuating circumstances.

To learn more about the club and get acquainted with others who share your interest in communications, make plans to attend an upcoming meeting. Informal study sessions are held at the clubhouse each Saturday from 8AM-10AM Eastern time. Formal meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month except December at 7:00PM Eastern at the clubhouse on 560 Johnson Boulevard. It’s easy to spot – there are dozens of antennas around the building.

Tower Work Continues at the CARC

Tower work continued at the CARC Clubhouse on Saturday August 15th.  The tower and rotator for the 20-Meter beam is now complete.  Now we just need to get the antenna build and put up on the tower.

Field Day 2020

A few days ago, the ARRL released a couple of amendments to the Field Day 2020 rules.

The first amendment is for class D stations (Home/Commercial Power). In the past stations operating as class D were unable to receive credited points for contacts with other class D stations. This year, that rule is no longer applicable. Class D stations will receive credited points for all contacts.

The second amendment is for aggregated club scores. In the past this was only allowed for class A stations. For Field Day 2020, this has been waived, allowing all classes to submit their scores for an aggregated club score. What this means, is that when operating from home your score will be summed with other club members scores. Thus resulting in an accumulated club score.

All that is required to do in order to submit your score as part of our Affiliated Club, is to include: Cleveland ARC in the club or team section of your log. This is how we are registered with the ARRL, so spelling must be exact.

This is what we have been waiting on and debating for months. We feel that since many of our members still choose to follow Social Distancing Guidelines this is how we should activate this year.

Also, we are still anticipating activating the KA4J contest station at the club house. Derek Wooley, KD5UBL will be coordinating these efforts. If you are interested in operating from the club house, please contact Derek at kd5ubl@carc.cc so he can schedule everything as needed.

Club House Activation – Winter Field Day 2020

  The Cleveland Amateur Radio will be activating the club house January 25th and 26th for the Winter Field Day Association’s, Winter Field Day Event. Activation will begin Saturday, January 25th at 1900z (2PM EST).

 This event is to help foster and train Amateur Radio Operators who believe that emergency communications in a winter environment is just as important as the preparations and practice that is done each summer but with some additional unique operational concerns.

Disasters are unpredictable by nature and can strike when you least expect them. The goal of this event is to help enhance your skills and ready you for all environmental conditions found in the USA during the spring, summer, fall and winter.

The CARC membership believes, as do those entities of ARRL Organizations like ARES & RACES, that maintaining your operational skills should not be limited to fair weather scenarios. The activation of Winter Field Day will enhance those already important skills of those that who generously volunteer their time and equipment to these organizations.

If you are serious about emergency communications as we are, we welcome you to join us for our event.

Club House Activation – RTTY Roundup!

The Cleveland Amateur Radio Club will be activating the Club House, Saturday January4th, for the ARRL RTTY Roundup.

The object of this activation is for amateur’s worldwide to contact and exchange QSO information with other amateurs using digital modes on 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meter bands. Any station may work any other station.

While this Contest allows for multiple digital modes, we will mainly focus on FT8 and FT4 operations. If this is a mode you have been curious about or are interested in learning about, this would be a great activation for you to participate in.
